Indexing Information

Indexing refers to the systematic inclusion of scholarly publication information in a bibliographic or citation database so that researchers can discover, identify, retrieve, and cite relevant academic literature.

Inclusion in an indexing or abstracting service can improve the discoverability and accessibility of published research by making article and journal information available through established scholarly search and information-retrieval systems. Depending on the database, indexed records may include article titles, authors, abstracts, keywords, affiliations, references, publication information, and citation relationships.

For authors, indexing can increase the visibility of published research within the research community and facilitate discovery by researchers conducting literature searches in the relevant subject area. It can also support the integration of article metadata into institutional, bibliographic, citation-analysis, and research-information systems.

Indexing decisions are made independently by individual indexing and abstracting services according to their own selection criteria and evaluation procedures. Publication by IRPH does not by itself constitute a guarantee of inclusion in any particular indexing database.
